From concept to packaging: a great example of teamwork

A smart robot requires smart packaging

Three specialists joined forces to develop the UVC robot. C10 conceived and developed the concept, SGL contributed its expertise in grass management and market applications, and Topa was brought in to develop packaging that would truly prepare the product for transport. As a result, the packaging was not an afterthought, but a logical part of the entire process. “We think from the product’s perspective. Topa then translates that into packaging that is both technically sound and practical to use.”

C10 had worked with Topa on previous projects and once again involved Topa as soon as the packaging challenge became more concrete. The product development team already had a clear vision of what the packaging needed to achieve but deliberately relied on Topa’s packaging expertise for the technical translation and development.

No standard box for an exceptional product

That expertise was essential, because this was anything but a standard packaging project. At the same time, the packaging needed to remain easy to handle and fit logically within the transport process. With shipments to the United States in mind, protection, palletisation and efficient use of space all played an important role.“It’s not just about protection. The packaging also needs to be practical to handle, stackable and suitable for transport.”

Topa therefore looked beyond the box itself and considered the bigger picture. It was precisely this combination of protection and practical usability that made the solution the right fit for the product.

A smart cardboard solution

Initially, a more traditional solution involving foam or plastic reinforcements seemed the obvious choice. Given the weight of the product, that would have been understandable. However, a different direction was quickly chosen: an intelligent cardboard construction that provides sufficient protection without relying on excessive amounts of other materials. “The fact that we didn’t automatically turn to foam or plastic is exactly what made this solution so strong.”

This choice also aligned perfectly with the broader story behind the product. The UVC robot was developed as part of a different approach to grass management, helping to reduce the use of chemical treatments. It therefore made sense to take a conscious approach to material use and recyclability in the packaging as well. “If the product itself is based on a more sustainable application, it makes sense for the packaging to reflect that as closely as possible.”

Quick decision-making and continuous refinement

One aspect that stood out was how practical the collaboration proved to be. C10 provided the initial ideas, sketches and product data, which Topa then translated into a technically sound and workable packaging design. The process did not stop at a single proposal; the design was continuously refined and adjusted where necessary. “Communication was direct. If something needed to be changed, it could be dealt with quickly.”

This ability to respond quickly not only improved efficiency but also ensured that the packaging became increasingly aligned with both the product and its practical application.

More than just a packaging supplier

For C10 and SGL, Topa’s added value extended beyond designing the packaging itself. The combination of packaging expertise and testing capabilities also played a key role. At the Topa Institute, the packaging could be assessed to determine whether it could withstand the demands of transport. As a result, the focus was not only on creating a good design, but also on providing additional assurance.“Not just assuming it will work but actually testing whether it really works, that gave us confidence.”

This is what made Topa more than simply a supplier of boxes. By contributing ideas, developing solutions and carrying out testing, a packaging solution was created that worked from start to finish.

Building a solution together

What this case demonstrates above all is that successful packaging is the result of collaboration. C10 contributed the concept, SGL the market expertise, and Topa the translation into a solution that works in transport, handling and material selection. Not as a final step added afterwards, but as an essential part of the overall project.

“With products like this, packaging is not a detail. It plays a decisive role in ensuring that the product arrives at its destination in perfect condition.” Do you also have a packaging challenge, or are you looking for advice on optimising your packaging process?
