Mirka reduces CO₂ footprint with sustainable filling material

Mirka is a world leader in surface finishing technology, offering a wide range of pioneering abrasive solutions for the surface finishing and precision industries. For its deliveries, Mirka wanted packaging with filler material that would offer durability as well as protection. That is where Topa partnered with supplier Pregis.

Mirka is a global growth company with 18 subsidiaries in Europe, the Middle East, North and South America and Asia. Its headquarters and production are located in Finland. More than 97% of their products are exported and sold in more than 100 countries.

The challenge: filling material that offers both protection and durability

For its deliveries, Mirka wanted packaging with filler material that would provide both durability and protection. Packaging that would therefore be ecologically sound and guarantee the right level of strength.

Packaging boxes were previously filled with ordinary, standard air bags that offered some form of protection but completely missed the durability aspect.

To keep the boxes with the filling material still looking neat, tidy and customer-friendly, Mirka sought a partner who could provide a product that could guarantee these conditions.

The solution: ecological, ergonomic and economical air bags

Mirka had been striving to reduce their carbon footprint more for some time. Therefore, Mirka decided to move away from the standard air bags, and switched to the recyclable and thus environmentally responsible air bags.

As a result, the Mini Pak’r V3 machine was chosen in combination with the grey, environmentally friendly, Renew foil air bags. A combination that is ecologically responsible, increases optimisation and productivity within the company and also works much better and faster ergonomically for the employees. This is because the V3 machine requires much less maintenance and does not possess Teflon straps that have to be replaced every time. The grey Renew film is produced from at least 50% recycled material and is 100% recyclable.

The drive to reduce their carbon footprint even goes so far that they have decided to make their packing boxes smaller, reducing the volume-metric weight and reducing the need for transportation.

Our partner Topa looked at our requirements together with supplier Pregis. The result was clear: the Airspeed Renew was exactly what we needed. We started testing and indeed, what they predicted turned out to be true: maximum product protection and our carbon footprint reduced by 35% compared to our previous air cushions!
